WAVES for Development Community Surf Project
Earth Sessions is proud to be supporting WAVES for Development in improving the futures of the youth of Peru. Following a donation of 400 surfboards from Global Surf Industries, the support of FCS and Soul Surfers, Earth Sessions has helped WAVES run two Pilot projects in Lobitos, Northern Peru. Earth Sessions has lent its expedition and volunteer management experience to WAVES to help develop programs for adventure volunteers and surfers who want to share the surf with the youth of the area, many for the first time due to the constraints of poverty. The importance of the programs is demonstrated by the fact that despite being a fishing community, many of the students had to be taught to swim before entering the surf! Assisting WAVES for Development in the coastal community of Lobitos provides us with the opportunity to give something back to the community while surfing the amazing waves that are found there.
Program Activities
Following the success of Pilot projects in February and July, ongoing projects have been planned with the Elementary and Secondary school in Lobitos, and with the Lobitos Municipality (Local Council). The programs will run over fourteen days, and include a number of events and workshops with the school and local community.
Program activities will focus on:
- Earth Connection - Environment and Conservation.
- Language Arts (a combination of English and Arts & Crafts)
- Swimming and water safety awareness.
- Surfing (including fitness, paddling, surf danger, etiquette, and correct technique etc)
- Construction Projects
- Social Entrepreneurship
WAVES have recruited experienced personnel in each field, including qualified Surf Instructors and Lifeguards, a Biologist and an English Language teacher. Together we are creating a program to inspire the local youth, with an ongoing program that aims to build capacity within the broader community of Lobitos and eventually other coastal communities. This is where we need your help!
WAVES for Development Program - Your Input
WAVES for Development is a relatively new organisation, staffed by volunteers from Peru and around the world. Many were on hand during the Pilot project, and have returned home in the knowledge that an ongoing program is being implemented. WAVES, through Olas Peru (Peru's premier surf school) have arranged for local representatives to be trained as qualified surf instructors to allow for the ongoing training of the local youth. Earth Sessions supports the WAVES ongoing program with an intensive two week program that allows for the participation of many more local youth, and with a range of extra activities to improve the lives of the locals. Your input helps define the boundaries of what is possible. During the Pilot program, volunteers assisted the locals and WAVES with swimming and surfing lessons, English language classes, conservation activities, beach clean up, tree planting, surf competition prep and implementation, surf photography and video, construction of board racks, football, cooking, program development, PR, and the development of policies and procedures. We also had people who hung out with and went surfing with the local youth, sharing personal experiences.
Your input is bound by your own level of enthusiasm, the pre-organised program activities, and by the special skills that you as an individual can bring to the program. We value each individual's personal skills and experience and encourage you to develop specific activities to be included in the project planning.
